Get a Half Saree To be in Fashion During Coming Festive Season!!! The half saree, or pavada, is making a comeback in South India with the rise of Bollywood films that star popular actresses like Bhavana. Traditional saree fabrics are luscious silks and soft cottons, but you can find modern pieces made from chiffon, rayon and other synthetic fibers. Before you drape yourself in a gorgeous saree, be culturally appropriate: Traditionally, only unmarried women wear them. The Right Material A full saree is generally wider and longer than a half saree, which may only partially cover a skirt. Depending on your height, half sarees are about 2 meters to 2½ meters long, they can be as thin as a half-meter wide. If you’re wearing a fashion-forward pavada to an event, keep the hosts in mind. While it’s fun to wear a half-saree made with a transparent fabric, save it for when you’re with your friends. When you attend a more formal occasion, it’s good manners to not show some skin. Use the bold colors on the skirt as a guide to choosing the perfect half saree color. If, for example, your skirt is turquoise with dark lilac accents, find a half saree in the same lilac color. Wrapping a Saree in the North Fashionistas in North India wrap their half sarees differently than those in the southern part of the continent. In your left hand, hold the plain end of the half saree. If the wrap is ultrawide, the bottom of the saree should barely brush the ground. Tuck the end of the half saree in your left hand into the front of your skirt. Wrap the half saree around you 1½ times. Bring the beautiful wrap, which should be behind you, over your right shoulder and across your torso. Tuck part of the remaining fabric from the saree into the waistband on the left side of your skirt. Wrapping a Saree in the South The process of wrapping a half saree in South India is similar, but the direction that you drape the decorative fabric is opposite. Start by holding the plain part of the saree in your right hand. Tuck the top edge of the wrap into the waistband at the front of your skirt. Wrap the half saree around yourself once and across your torso, from your right hip over your left shoulder. You can leave the fabric draped over your shoulder or you can bring the end of the saree back around you and tuck the end into the waistband at the front of your skirt on your right side. Insider Tips When choosing a half saree, go for one that has a solid color and a decorative border. If you want one that has a printed pattern, choose one that has small graphics, or your saree will look gaudy. Use a brooch to help keep your half saree in place, especially if you leave it simply draped over your shoulder. However, if you use a safety pin, place the pin on the back of your shoulder or under your clothes so the pin doesn’t show and look tacky. And never leave home wearing a wrinkled half saree. If it has wrinkles, iron them out before facing the world.
