Given that Assad has mobilized the entire Syrian military to entrench and fortify itself within civilian homes and installations, a missile strike against Syria would at best be ineffective and at worst cause high numbers of civilian casualties and increase resentment against the United States, thus garnering support for Assad’s regime and causing an increase in recruitment for terrorist cells. There are also the unpredictable responses of Russia and China. At this point, I think military options should be off the table, or this will get much uglier than Iraq and Afghanistan ever became.
