Given the plummeting confidence level in the party, Sonia Gandhi, the Congress president, has her task cut out. But even she is finding the going tough, considering the many battles she is having to fight single handedly. The tide seems to be turning against her son in the Congress. But a section of the party feels that the Draft Priyanka Campaign is the handiwork of a few leaders who are opposed to Rahul Gandhis style of functioning. What has made matters worse for Madam is the fact that three CWC members are supposedly on the verge of quitting the party and have, apparently, conveyed their disappointment to the party president. Sonia Gandhi, in turn, has pressed AK Antony to prevail upon these disgruntled leaders to buy time. She is also upset with Avtar Singh Bhadanas exit. Bhadana, an influential Gujjar leader from Haryana, had been given a seat on the high table during an iftar party. Yet, the honour heaped upon him made no difference. The poor turn- out of senior CWC members at 24 Akbar Road on Independence Day has caused Sonia Gandhi further anguish. Save for a handful of leaders like CP Joshi, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Motilal Vora, Digvijaya Singh and Janardhan Dwivedi, there was no sign of the rest of the bigwigs. Clearly, very few sailors want to be a part of a sinking ship.
