Golden Gloves super show live on SuperSport Gennady Golovkin, the most savage puncher in world boxing, will be going for his 16th straight knockout win when he defends his WBA and IBO middleweight championships against Ghana’s Osumanu Adama in Monte Carlo this weekend. The Golden Gloves tournament, promoted by Rodney Berman, will be broadcast live on Saturday on SS9 from 7pm. Golovkin, who hails from Kazakhstan, has the highest KO percentage (89) of any middleweight champion in history and is favoured to beat the Chicago-based Adama. South African interest will be on former IBF champion Nkosinathi Joyi, who challenges Rey Loreto of the Philippines for the IBO light-flyweight title. The southpaw is in a new weight division and expected to give Loreto all the fight he can handle. There will also be focus on SA-based Junior Makabu, who originally hails from the DRC. He will put Argentine Ruben Angel Mino’s chin to the test in their cruiserweight clash. Although Mino has a perfect record of 20 stoppage wins in as many bouts, he hasn’t fought anyone with the class and power of Makabu. But the man of the moment is Golovkin, one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world. He is already being touted as a potential future opponent for Floyd Mayweather jnr, although the weight differential may scupper that, and is seen as the sport’s next superstar on account of his explosiveness. A squat power puncher, his relentless attack and ability to withstand punishment make him a formidable foe. Adama isn’t without his own strengths. He gave former IBF champion Daniel Geale a great argument during their fight in 2012 and boasts a stoppage win over former champion Roman Karmazin. “I’ve worked the whole time to make me a better, different fighter,” said Adama. “I don’t know what [Golovkin’s trainer] Abel Sanchez is expecting to see, but he will be surprised and see a different guy on February 1. They pick the wrong fighter – me!” The main undercard bout features Ukraine’s Max Bursak defending his WBA Continental belt against Jarrod Fletcher of Australia.
