Golf as a Ministry . I’ve heard it said from my friend Dave Golf is his ministry—said so grave Taking his que, I’m doing it too Twice a week at least—spikes in my shoe. We started with one group of twenty-six A second of thirty-eight grabs their sticks The first group is grey, bald and retired The second, mostly younger, working and hired. The young play Saturdays—don’t even droop. They blast that ball, they raise a whoop For them, consistency is out of the loop As the grey-beards, all-wise—in we troop. Straight down the fairway we hit—not far Then on the green in two, or three we are The youngsters whose rounds are so few Out of trouble they work—soon with a clue. We fogies smile in that cryptic way of ours As the youngsters flail swinging clubs like oars We know straight and true is the way to score Raw power crooked, we hear the cry “Fore”! We watch them come in all flustered with sweat For ministry their appetite primed and whet. They get to see subtle over power and jet They smile and relax as they lose the bet. So. “Playing golf is a ministry?” you ask I respond, “Yes. This is no ordinary task”. Someone has to do it, (however, no flask) And I’m getting better with the multi-task. Because ministry rewards a crown above And golf on earth, a crown here—sort of Some say that we’re double-dippin’ thereof Into ministry rewards with our golf glove.
