Good Morning, well the beast from the sub tropics has arrived! Rain is starting to push into most parts of Canterbury as I write this with some of the heaviest falls not far from Kaikoura. Things are going as forecast and today looks set to be a cool day with temperatures between 9-12 degrees with fresh SW winds developing this afternoon and periods of heavy rain for most in particular North Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast. What you need to know: * North Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast still look to bear the brunt. Totals of 120mm are possible for the Kaikoura mountains and 70mm for the Kaikoura Coast. North Canterbury especially coastal parts like the hill around Cheviot 50-60mm. Surface flooding/ landslips are possible during the afternoon. Conditions in these areas will start to ease of late afternoon/evening *Christchurch currently has drizzle and light rain, we expect heavy falls of rain to start developing around 11am.The heaviest rain will ease off around 5pm *The effects from this deep sub-tropical low will affect all of Canterbury but places in Mid and South Canterbury will see far less rain but still expect a wet/cool day ahead. *Currently Mt Hutt and Porters Pass have snow falling and have received a fresh dusting overnight but we expect freezing levels to rise during the afternoon to around 2200m so below 1800m precipitation will fall as rain - not so good! Also of note, MetService has issued a snow warning for Porters Pass but we don’t see any problems, it’s not cold enough below 900m but check Land Transport Agency for latest reports if you’re travelling over the Pass. * So guys it looks set to be a cool wet day and people in parts of North Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast should prepare for a very wet day but as mentioned above conditions will start to improve for all of Canterbury later this afternoon 4-5pm * Outlook for the next few days: We will have mostly cloudy skies during Thursday but definitely improving as the day progresses with light winds and any morning showers clearing. Friday looks set to be a settled day with light NE winds and harmless high cloud with mild temperatures so hang in there today. Keep the reports of conditions in your area coming in, remember to state your location. Back later today, in the meantime keep warm and dry! -RV
