Good afternoon! This is an update to my earlier email re: Fall 2014 Lobby Week (October-November). Here is the info I have so far: 1.) Specific dates: the entire months of October and November 2.) Specific issues: a.) International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA): makes ending violence against women and girls globally a top diplomatic and foreign assistance priority for the United States. IVAWA would standardize and improve existing U.S. foreign assistance efforts to stop the global crisis of violence that affects one in three women and girls, integrating a lens of gender-based violence prevention and response into all U.S. overseas programming. Ask: Activists urge their Representative and their two Senators to cosponsor IVAWA (S.2307, H.R.3571) before the end of the legislative session. b.) End Racial Profiling Act (ERPA): would prohibit all law enforcement agents at state, federal, local and tribal level from stopping, investigating or detaining an individual based on his or her race, ethnicity, religion or national origin. It would also require law enforcement agencies which receive federal grants to institute specific policies to eliminate racial profiling, including training of officers on how to avoid acting on the basis of stereotypes and assumptions about minorities. ERPA would help our nation uphold its obligations under international treaties including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, and help prevent law enforcement officers from violating Americans’ rights under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, as well as the Fourth Amendment’s guarantee of protection from unreasonable searches. Ask: Activists urge their Representative and their two Senators to cosponsor ERPA (S.1038, H.R.2851). 3.) Sign up: aiusa.org/lobbyweek 4.)
