Good and bad week. Billy has had a good week and made some great - TopicsExpress

Good and bad week. Billy has had a good week and made some great progress. The removal of his Tracie is a fantastic step forward and he is coping with this well. I have looked around the ward and spoken to other families and there is so many patients still with their Tracies in after many, many months that Billy has done fantastic to achieve this in such a short space of time. To actually do this means Billy has to breathe and, more importantly, swallow on his own. We all do this without thinking but the reality is this takes muscle control and awareness. When we swallow a small flap of skin blocks our windpipe and leaves our throat open to our stomach. If this flap does not move then the natural path is down the windpipe and into the lungs. To actually swallow you use muscles in your throat which need to be told when to work. Billy is doing all of this own his own. Sounds so simple but in brain trauma cases, this is hard to achieve and is a fantastic goal to reach. Many of the staff are so pleased with him and they keep saying how marvellous he has done. We have now been given the go ahead to take him out of the ward and today Sara is planning to take him out in his chair into the fresh air. His first time out of the ward in 16 weeks and will be a lovely moment. He now has a TV in his room and at last they have got it working! Only waited 3 weeks to get an aerial. Billy now lays in bed and watches the box. We are now looking into locations to move Billy to and over the next few weeks we will be viewing these ahead of making a decision. This will be a Nursing/ Care home which will give Billy a much nicer environment and we will bring in additional Specialists to work with Billy on his PT, OT and SLT. So a good week for the family and Billy. However, we have also received some bad news on other fronts with a motorbike accident to a family member and the tragic death of a friend. Our thoughts are with them during these tough times. It also means that I have succumb to the pressures of the family and am selling my baby after 30 years of biking!! So my Fazer 1000 is going up for sale today and I am looking to get a Toyota Prius to replace it!!! This will be used as a Company car and will be sign written with our Company Logo so its not all bad. It makes sense for the owner of a Renewable Energy Company to drive a Green car after all. But I am keeping the S8 and R1 so its not all doom and gloom, still got the fastest babies in the nursery. So a week of mixed emotions and for once this is not all about Billy. Once again I will advise that visiting is open to all again and we would love to see more of you visiting him. He now looks more like the old Billy and is not as scary looking as he was when many of you visited him initially. I know that this shocked many of his visitors and was upsetting for some but he is now looking really good and normal. So get in touch if you want to visit, he needs you guys now!!
