Good evening Jerseyfield friends and family! It is the mayor < Donna > posting as our head administrator Lauri is taking care of Novalee at home after surgery. She did great and now is on pain meds for the next few days. Sleep however has been sorely lacking so I can bet mom and child are currently tucked in the covers and sound asleep. Tonights posting is about a little place called Leipzeg. It is not the one in Germany but a ghost town that once existed in our very midst. Many many years ago, when the railroad traveled up to Jerseyfield, there was a settlement called Leipzeg where the loggers and their families lived. They even had their own post office and store at one time. Logging was a thriving industry in our area and homes were built to accommodate people who worked in the woods. There was even a secondary road that ran parallel to Jerseyfield and even connected to another road that brought you over to Dairy Hill, but that is a subject for another post. Like all booming industries that rely on natural resources, the settlement of Leipzeg was abandoned over time as the tree were depleted. Forest fires were also a threat to contend with, as modern fire fighting equipment was not available like it is today. A strike of lightning could ignite a fire that would burn thousands of acres before it could be brought under control. As the hemlock and timber was depleted, loggers moved onto other areas to ply their trade and Leipzeg became a part of history. But if one knows where to look, you can find the old cellar walls poking out where homes once stood, and most likely iron utensils can be unearthed as well. It would be interesting to know if any spirits haunt the old settlement grounds. Curtiss Cemetery is full of people who lived, loved and worked their whole lives here. Surely some of them are not resting peacefully but remain on this side of the veil, roaming where they may!
