Good morning, Two thought provoking quotes from Will Rodgers: 1. Too many people spend money they havent earned, to buy things they dont want, to impress people they dont like. 2. Dont tell me where your priorities are. Show me where you spend your money and Ill tell you what they are. Today is Black Friday. How ironic is it that the day after Thanksgiving is Black Friday. How ironic is it that, Immediately following a day of mindful gratitude for the things we have, comes a day of frenzied buying of the things we THINK we need. This year Black Friday actually invaded Thanksgiving Day.....Ugh! These days marketers have an unprecedented ability to intrude into our personal lives and convince us that we need things that in reality we dont actually need. We face a constant barrage of messages that have been created through intensive research and close examination of consumer behavior so that retailers can more effectively influence buying decisions. Retailers are skilled in the art of getting us to buy things that we didnt even know we wanted. Toys. Gadgets. Cars. Vacation destinations. Clothes. Stuff. The list is endless. Sure buying things is always a personal decision, but its very important that we examine our decision-making with a sense of clarity in order to be able allocate our money on things that we truly need, and not impulsively spend it on artificially created desires. Many people create anxiety and worry for themselves by spending more money than they have earned because they fall pray to the temptation of false needs. Do you really want and/or need everything that you buy? How much of our buying is done on impulse, or done to impress others? More people should ask themselves these important questions before they shop, Do I really need this? Can I afford this? Will I use this? What about the stuff I already have, is it no longer good enough? Instead of inviting so much dis-ease in our life through false needs, lets embrace a sense of gratitude and the Spirit of Thanksgiving as our primary guiding force this holiday season.
