Good morning, everyone! We begin this Monday with a story that caught on like a wild fire over the weekend in legal circles and sparked debate in many law-related LinkedIn groups: Will Wal-mart soon be offering in-store legal services in the U.S.? The Toronto Star (on.thestar/1oIo7OT) and ABA Journal (bit.ly/1mHhHOG) both ran stories late Friday about how Wal-mart has already introduced low-cost, no-wait legal services, such as wills or notarized documents -- at those same famously low Wal-mart prices -- all across Canada. And the same may be headed our way soon. An excerpt: Legal services in a retail context is also already established in the United Kingdom. The co-operative (UKs version of Wal-mart) offers customers everything from food to pharmacy to funerals and legal services. “I think it’s a good idea because it makes law more accessible …law is too expensive for the average Canadian and average Canadians don’t know when they need a lawyer sometimes,” says Mitch Kowalski, author of Avoiding Extinction: Re-imagining Legal Services for the 21st Century. “Maybe at the Walmart you can pop in and ask a general question and create a rapport because you’re at the Walmart buying other stuff. It’s not set off as a special event. It’s just part of your daily life.” LinkedIn discussion: https://linkedin/company/the-florida-bar
