Good news from Solomon Islands, if it can be made to work: SIBC 29 April 2014 Police, prosecutors and several Government Ministries have formed a new, high level taskforce, to crackdown on environmental crime in the country. A statement from the landowner’s Advocacy and Legal Support Unit of the Public Solicitor’s Office, LALSU, says the taskforce was created during a forum held at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara last week. Speaking during the forum LALSU Senior Legal Officer, Tearo Walenenea, says the initiative is a response to the current increase of illegal logging activities in the country. Mr Walenenea says this includes logging without development consent, logging close to streams, or failing to rehabilitate a log pond areas. Meanwhile, representatives from RSIPF, ODPP, the Ministry of Forestry and Research, Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification, Immigration, the Participating Police Force, PPF, Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources , Central Bank, Company Haus and others participated in the forum also raised similar concerns in combating the ongoing environmental crime. SIBC News understands the forum was a joint initiative between LALSU, Public Solicitor’s Office and the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force.
