Goodluck suffers humiliation as APC secure landslide victory in Niger bye-election Sunday, 31 August 2014 10:52 PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan suffered a humiliating setback yesterday when his governing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) succumbed to a comprehensive defeat in the Niger East Senatorial bye-election. Called to replace Late Senator Dahiru Awaisu Kuta who died following a protracted illness, the election was a two-horse race between the PDP and the main opposition party the All Progressives Congress (APC). President Goodlucks PDP was represented by Dr Shem Zagbayi, a former Niger State deputy governor, while lawyer David Umaru was the APCs flag bearer. With all the results almost in, Mr Umaru is heading for a landslide victory in the poll that was characterised by a large turnout. Mr Umaru, 54, has already claimed victory and APC leaders in the state have begun celebrating what has been dubbed a major PDP upset. Mr Umaru said: “I am impressed with what the Independent national Electoral Commission (Inec) has done. It is more peaceful and organised and it shows the determination of Inec officials to get it right.” Results from the nine local government areas where the election took place gave the APC candidate an unassailable lead over Dr Shem Zagbayi, with Mr Bello of the All Progressives Grand Alliance in third place. Minna, the Niger State capital was agog last night, with youth jubilating as soon as the results of the peaceful election began circulating. Inec is yet to formally declare Mr Umaru the winner though but official results are expected today.
