Gore rating 3/5. Be warned those of a nervous disposition. On a rain-curtailed visit to St Peters churchyard last week, I took a picture of an impressive grave marker that had the extra note of Accidentally killed on it in addition to the usual names and dates. I put it on my to-do list while researching the other local stuff, and forgot about it until I turned up a tragic tale of a young man killed while hunting. I checked the stories, and it is indeed the same story. Robert Spens, son of Nathaniel and Emily (who were living at Frimley Park), was out hunting with the Ripley and Knaphill Harriers, when they followed a fox onto Romping Downs, close to the Ash Ranges. Not having seen the warning signs, they didnt realise that the ranges were live, but when a bullet passed close to the hunt leader he turned them back immediately. Sadly, it was not soon enough for Robert who took a bullet through the neck and fell from his horse with fatal injuries. A terrible accident, and one made sadder by the fact that his mother was also with the hunt and was one of the first to reach him. His parents are buried in the same plot, and mentioned on either side of the grave marker. As always I have another building location to ascertain. The Spens were living at Athallan Grange by 1911, does anyone know where this was?
