Got an email from one of my professors for my first courses at Penn State that start on Monday. Im so screwed. I have two classes. This is only ONE of them. *head desk* Hello, my name is Rex Simpson and I am your instructor this semester for 501, Labor and Employment Law. I will be posting a variety of information in the first week on how I grade, what I am looking for, etc. But before you actually see the course and start to feel ill, I wanted to try and reassure you. This is a great course. I did not write it, but I have been involved in labor and employment law for 40 years, and I can assure you; this is valuable material. I am a licensed attorney in both California and Pennsylvania and you can learn other exciting (?) stuff about my background in my bio, posted on the site. And while I am convinced this is a very valuable course, I have to admit the first time I saw 501 and particularly, the assignments, I contacted the course author, John Gerak (a successful practicing labor lawyer in Cleveland) and complained. I thought the assignments were too long and complex, I said the class will be overcome with exhaustion by week three. John (a five year veteran of the NFL) assured me everyone would be fine. And after teaching the course a couple of times, I agree. The assignments are long, two or three sets of questions, each with multiple parts. But they are short answer questions, you are not crafting lengthy essays like in most of our other courses. We did eliminate a paper that had been part of the course, but the rest of the course is rock solid. John loves to craft amusing scenarios, but the facts and the legal principles involved are very real. All of the lessons touch on issues that you will encounter over the course of your HR career. I have been there and this stuff is the real deal. Fortunately, our textbook is excellent and there are lots of supplementary research material available on the internet to help you. So trust me on this one; after this is over, you will be ready for Christmas break, a bit exhausted, but you will agree that this was among the most important courses you took in the program. So while this course will be a lot of work, by December, you will be a whole lot more knowledgeable. Did I say this will be a lot of work enough times? Welcome!
