Government shutdown affecting hazmat special permits: The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) got shut down because of the lowering standards in federal funding. Regarding its special permits, PHMSA made following announcements. Hazmat special permits: According to the announcement of the agency, all of the requests for hazmat special permits will get processed and reviewed when the government will be re opened. You must have applied for the renewal of a special permit at least 60 days before the expiration date of your approval has reached, only then you can continue your operations under the special permit till the time PHMSA makes a final decision on your application for renewal. Also you must have an official record of the PHMSA messages. No one is there to refrain PHMSA from taking actions for suspending, modifying or terminating a special permit. Hazmat emergency special permits: Those applications that are related to emergencies which involve safety of the human life or protection of the property are seriously reviewed and act upon. But the requests that are related to the kind of emergencies like safety of human life or protecting any kind of property will come into consideration only when government will be reopened.
