Grant Robertsons statement published on his Facebook page: Sometimes I know when people watch Parliament it can look like, at best, a bit of a game, and at worst, a total circus. Actually, for the most part its neither, and we all, whatever Party we are from, do our best to debate issues with sincerity and respect for the roles we have been elected to. But not today. Today in Parliament I watched the Prime Minister of New Zealand behave in a way that was a disgrace to our democracy and a sad reflection of how arrogant and corrupted his government has become. There are many stories on-line where you can read what was in the report from Inspector General of Intelligence and Security Cheryl Gwynn, ( I have linked to a summary from Nicky Hager) but the bottom line is it shows that a smear machine led by John Keys Deputy Chief of Staff Phil De Joux and his Senior Advisor Jason Ede fed to Cameron Slater (incorrect) information from the SIS to attack Phil Goff. They used burner phones like drug dealers use and private email accounts to cover their tracks. They used information from our domestic spy agency for political purposes. And John Keys reaction- nothing to do with him, no need for him to apologise, no need to take responsibility, either as the boss of these characters or as the Minister then responsible for the SIS. His attitude in Parliament was to deny, divert and demean. It was, in short, a slap in the face for democracy, for the dignity of his position and to New Zealanders who expect Ministers to work in their interests. Today was not actually about the game of politics for me. It was about a Prime Minister who has abused his power and knowledge and made me ashamed to be an MP in our democracy. That doesnt happen every day, and it saddens me more than almost anything I have seen in my six years as an MP. New Zealand deserves better. dirtypoliticsnz/…/notable-sections-of-the-inspe…/
