Great comment from a follower….Your post on Saturday about the young soccer referee made me smile and remember a day when my son was the center referee. He had played since he was 4 and at the age of 12 wanted to be a ref. He and my husband took the course together. Our deal was that they would ref together to prevent him from being berated by parents. My husband was out of town, so I took my son after his game to ref 2 games that afternoon for 9 & 10 year olds. In the second game, there was a mom on the sideline that continued to yell at my son that it was one bad call after another. (I bit my tongue the whole first half) And at half time I moved my chair over close to hers and struck up a quiet conversation. Not to embarrass her, but just to educate and give her a different perspective. Which one was her son? She answered #22 on the red team. After a bit of silence she finally asked which one was my son? I told her the young man in the yellow jersey that was the center referee. She was very quiet and then said Im sorry I then quietly proceeded with the conversation that my son had been playing for 8 years, took the referee class to give back to a sport that he loved. And that I hoped if her son ever decided to give back to something he loved, no one would ever treat him with the disrespect she had just showed my son. Again she apologized and I thanked her for that. I didnt move my chair away for the 2nd half, and she was silent the entire second half. When the game was over and I met my son at the car he asked, What did you say to that lady who yelled the entire first half at me, the second half she was quiet? I just smiled and said, she was here to watch her son, so I helped her to see you as someone elses son.
