Great letter from Ruth in Dopmpost on Nationals plans to wreck Esplanade and Korokoro stream The Transport Agency protests that Trevor Mallards claim that the Petone Grenada Link road would bring an additional 10,000 vehicles a day to Petone Esplanade is scaremongering (Mallard warns of Petone traffic chaos with link road, August 14). But NZTAs project manager on February 17 told Korokoro Environmental Group representatives that current traffic flow of 27,000 vehicles per day between Tawa and Petone would increase to 38,000. Petone people have argued strongly that the long-planned and well-supported Cross Valley Link on Wakefield St to Gracefield and Seaview should be built instead, at much lower cost. NZTA does not admit that the Grenada road will impact on the pristine Korokoro Stream in Belmont Regional Park. In fact, NZTAs preferred optional route would be excavated out of the steep hillside half way up the Korokoro Valley catchment immediately above the streambed. Blasting out and removing eight million cubic metres of rock and soil, and massive earthworks needed for the six-lane heavy freight highway, must have a destructive and enduring effect on the landscape, ecology, and quiet tranquil environment of this valley. Is this scaremongering, or is it a well-reasoned warning? RUTH MANSELL Korokoro Head
