Great rebuttal by Roland Lim towards this article. Im just gonna take a little time to rebut this article, because I think people need to know whats out there and happening NOW and whats coming ahead. 2 - 3 years ago, I would have gladly agreed and approved of this , and probably even fuel the extra angst. But Ive seen a surge of pro-active savvy new generation of musicians who are weathering and braving the storm like never before , and people from all walks of the music community banding together for a greater cause. Ive seen fellow producers , songwriters and musicians Im proud to call friends grace the world stage and Im even more excited with some of the younger new breed of talents Im currently working with over the next couple of months. SG MUSO has done an amazing job to fuel this new wave of advocacy and opportunities over the last 2 years and Im extremely proud to be a council member on it now to be able to collaborate with some of the best musical minds in this town . The National Arts Council and Noise Singapore programs and teams are doing an phenomenal job in grooming the next wave of talent , Im here in the UK on a grant by the NAC to understand funding and how to develop Youth arts based programs for our future and plenty of musicians/bands/artists I know have benefited from their grants , whether for touring or recording or marketing ( other Music grants are also available from MDA/WDA etc). We have Music Matters Live Conference and Academy in Singapore , an incredible learning experience that also showcases our best local talents, Ignite , Noise Fest ,YFest , Singapore Arts Festival , Night Fest and a growing number of festivals amongst plenty more to cater here and the turnouts have been encouraging. A lot of the problems highlighted in this article arent exclusive to the Singapore Music Community ( e.g Music Venues worldwide constantly face closure due to noise complaints or ridiculous reasons or ridiculous rent), fight the good fight and contribute in whatever ways you can to grow and nurture it. Take the initiative to work and research on the issues we face and problems we need to solve and most importantly : Be irresistibly awesome at what you do. Hopeless is just a state of mind. xoxo
