Great review in our local paper this week to do with our Bar @ Glenmore Lodge Lochain Bar, Glenmore Written byE. Tup Published: August 2014 We escaped the madness that is Thunder in the Glens weekend in Aviemore and headed up to Glenmore for some fresh air and a wee stroll around Loch Morlich. Having completed our family outing without too much bickering and complaining, it was too late for me (who else?!) to start cooking and so we decided to grab a bite whilst we were out. But where would we go whilst the strath was reverberating to the sound of Harley Davidson motorbikes? Aviemore was crammed and all the restaurants heaving – and that was mid-afternoon! It was at the point that we remembered that The Lochain Bar at sportscotlands national outdoor centre Glenmore Lodge does bar meals. Admittedly, it does not spring readily to mind for dinner – and certainly I would not recommend it for a romantic evening (even accustomed as I am to the low expectations set by Reyard) – but as a cheap-ish and tasty retreat and for those families staying in the Glenmore area, its a great option. The lodge itself has had a bit of a facelift since I was last there and no longer felt like walking into an institution. The bar area is large but welcoming and well presented with a mix of comfy chairs and dining tables and chairs – the dedicated dining area is rather more outdoor training centre in its furnishings. But, of course, there is the view, uninterrupted and spectacular, of the Cairngorms. There was a pool table and a box of toys (Scrabble, Jenga etc) to keep the ankle biters happy while we waited for our food to arrive from the menu which is limited but covers all bases. Two of the Tup jnrs chose the kiddies portion of spaghetti bolognaise with garlic bread and parmesan (£5). It was polished off in next to no time as was the surprisingly the large chunk of garlic bread that came with it. Big orange smiley faces all round there then until Middle Tup made a garlic bread raid whilst Little Tup was distracted. I ordered the Lochain Burger in a brioche bun, tomato, relish, Monterey Jack cheese, onion rings and chips (£9.95). I was not sorry – the burger was delicious as were the accompanying onion rings and chips. The chips deserve a special mention as they were large and chunky – twice or thrice cooked – with a lovely fluffy interior and a real crisp finish. Reynard opted for the steak, mushroom and stout pie with onion gravy and chips or jacket potato (£9.75). His ample portion arrived with the gravy in a separate little jug which was nice especially for a Northern boy who likes his gravy. The pie was excellent – with plenty of filling and a thick pastry crust – although some of the peas could be described as being beyond al dente! As it was a spur of the moment thing we did not have puds but on offer were sticky toffee pudding (£4) and warm Belgian waffles (£4) as well as tubs of well-known ice cream. The bill including drinks came to £45 – not bad at all for a very enjoyable family meal. The Lochain Bar serves good grub that caters for its market perfectly. My tip is to build up an appetite with a lovely walk in stunning Glenmore beforehand.
