Greek Temple of Hera in Selinunte, Sicily. The ruins of Selinunte are some of the most impressive of the ancient Greeks and they are located in the territory of Castelvetrano, in the southern area of Trapani. Selinunte was once one of the richest and most powerful cities in the world. Established in 628 BC, it was the most westerly of the Greek colonies, and grew to approximately 100,000 inhabitants. It was sacked and destroyed in 409 BC by Hannibal and the Carthaginians, and lay in ruin until excavations began in 1823.
