Greenville-Gay News for September 13, 2013 The Lottie Moon 5K - TopicsExpress

Greenville-Gay News for September 13, 2013 The Lottie Moon 5K Run/ Walk is this Saturday at 9 am. Hosted by Greenville Baptist, the race early on separates the amateurs from the regulars as it starts at the church, winds down Terrell Street away from town and sends walkers and runners up the long gradual cardiac incline on 109 to the court square. Traffic is sure to be diverted so plan accordingly if you are driving through the city. There are lots of awards in many age categories; lots of fun hiking Greenville with friends plus raising money for a good cause. Congratulations to Eddie Pollard who will assume the Head of School position September 23rd at Flint River Academy. Students, teachers, and parents will enjoy getting to know this educator who comes so highly accredited. Dr. Dobbs, however, will be missed. Congratulations to Chuck and Julie Tigner who are going to be grandparents! Brian and Christina are over the moon thrilled as are Chuck and Julie. Michael Tigner earned a district sales award and was rewarded with a holiday in Napa. He enjoyed San Fran and a ballgame too. Trinity United Methodist had its annual sale last Small Business Saturday and raised over nine thousand dollars. A good portion of that profit has to come from Dollie Crowder’s ham biscuits! Folks come from all over just for breakfast! John Taylor told me the sale encourages them to march through the house and de-clutter and get rid of household items that never get used nor are needed. Dove season opened last Saturday with a Bang! (I couldn’t resist). Beautiful weather and our county is abundant with birds and the natural beauty of the season. Hunters where we were shooting had their phones following the UGA game plus other scores. Greenville’s Kenarious Gates left the South Carolina game because of his ankle, but UGA has a bye this week and Gates is said to be fine. Bow season opens next weekend (14th) so we will see the serious hunters with land leases and big dreams come through town. The Meriwether Historical Society has an exciting fall picnic planned for the 29th of September. The venue will be the historic Hiram Warner-Clark-Gabriel home. It is architecturally fascinating because the one story home became a two story with the dismantling and repositioning of the identical Abner Callaway home that was down the road. All of this done over a hundred years ago too! The Gabriels recently have given the grand lady a facelift, and it is sparkling and ready to welcome the organization. Call Sallie Mabon for more information and to make your reservation for the picnic. Stanley Wheelus is catering. This Sunday the 15th Carmel United Methodist will be having its Homecoming Celebration. The speaker will be Rev. Gary Parrish from Newnan, the special music will be performed by the Barnett family and after the eleven o’clock service there will be lots of good food at the dinner on the grounds. Bettie Will KUTT CALHOUN says, “Y’all come.” September 19-28 are dates for the Coweta County Fair. Great family entertainment, carnival rides, music, and farm animals and activities. September 21st at Pyne Road Park there will be Pickin’ in the Park with the Marshall Tucker Band, Paris Luna and Wet Willie. It is a benefit concert for West Georgia Health Cancer Center. Health concerns: Mary Anne Harman’s surgery is this week, Rob Estes begins his cancer treatments, Cara Argroves Taylor begins her treatments for cancer, and Peggy Jones is still dancing from hearing the news her son is cancer free. The Merry Weather Garden Club will be meeting Wednesday, September 25th at 10 am at Marilyn Carter’s home in Woodland. The speaker is Terri Edwards and her topic is, ahem, "Gardening as we get Older." Marilyn and Lynda Woodall host the meeting and they will be serving a light lunch. Contact either of them for more information and to Rsvp. Marilyn attended the Yellow Daisy Festival last weekend and is sure have news about our Redbud District’s big flower show. Many memories of September 11, 2001 as we mark the anniversary this week.
