Greg Ristow demonstrates an exercise in stopping and starting. The students move to Gregs improvised music. They step the beat until they hear the phrase end. On the next (silent) beat, they stop walking and start clapping. They must maintain Gregs tempo. He plays a new phrase and the students start to walk again. Notice how they stop. Is it awkward or secure? Does it improve with practice? Notice the preparatory energy in their bodies just before they start to walk. What happens physically when they start too early? Greg plays a variety of phrase lengths. Is it musically satisfying or random? What preparatory musical gestures incite the students to start? What closing musical gestures guide the students to stop? The exercise develops inner tempo and intuition for musical phrase. How might it relate to your instrumental students technique?
