Ground Water Level - Alarming situation in Piravom Panchayat, Ernakulam Dt: Piravom: Ground water level is going down at Kakkad (Ward 2) of Piravom Panchayat. Drought is very badly affected here, since water conservation programs are not planned and implemented here, in spite of having ample resources. “Western Ghats Watershed Programs” are initiated at Piravom very recently with the support of “Samridhy” (NGO), Muvatupuzha. Regret to note that Soil Survey Dept. have identified some schemes in this Panchayat, but which are not in appropriate and potential locations having large sources to conserve water. Understand that the District Planning Office is controlling the execution of these identified mini schemes with the help of local Panchayat and Agrl. Office. Had proper publicity given among public before the survey, right projects could have been well identified. Kakkad Jn. hill top in Piravom Panchayat, where KWA Treatment Plant is working, the land slope is going down towards the north, north-east and north-west sides reaching Uzhavoor thodu and Muvattupuzha river. These are the potential areas suitable for water conservation in large quantity. North side of Onakkoor-Kakkad-Nechoor road and both sides (east and west) of Piravom-Kakkad-Mammalassery road. Chaliyathuchira check dam (VCB) across Uzhavoor thodu (Piravom/Ramamangalam Panchayat’s boundary), notified it’s tender by the SE (MI), EKM, few days back and the completion of the project will take months, after awarding the work to the Contractor. Piravom Panchayat also arranged cleaning of the Panchayat well at Kakkad Jn., considering acute shortage of water for Rs.25,000/= The following schemes are capable of storing enough water. 1) Construction of a VCB in the down stream of Mudakkil Bridge in Ramamangalam Pt. The estimate of the MI work for Rs. 45 lakhs is with the CE (I&A), TVM pending all sanctions. 2) “Manthadathil Oli”or “Paranthadam” in ward 2 of Piravom Panchayat can very well be utilized for storage of waste water from KWA treatment plant. This is only a micro scheme, which can be completed within 2-3 months time with a funding of Rs.10 -15 lakhs 3) “Bhoothalakuzhy” northern side of Kakkad-Nechoor road near to Anakkavu mala and Thozhuppattu Match Works in private property, the damaged pond with water springs can be improved by the Piravom Panchayat. This is also a small work. 4) Ernakulam DTPC can take up the rural tourism related project of a natural water reservoir at “Velithar nilam”, now waste land having an extent of 8 acres plus by extending the earthern bund to Valel plot near Mudakkil bridge on the side of Kumarakom-Nedumbassery highway. The reservoir can be used for pedal boating, swimming and water sports, lotus-lilly cultivation, fish farming, film shooting etc. This project can be expanded suitably even for tree huts and rest houses for tourists with necessary amenities. Land can be acquired on a profit sharing basis also like Vyttila Mobility Hub. This will be a wonderful dream project, for sure, in all respects.
