Growing up in rural Wisconsin, I remember having squirrel stew at least once. Cooked in a pressure cooker with carrots and potatoes. Not bad except for having to pick out the buckshot! My dad also fed us wild rabbit, snapping turtle and once a year the town folks (Grantsburg) would get their dogs together for a raccoon hunt and then the coon feed. Of course that was back in the 40s and 50s. Times have changed but even the famous cookbook The Joy of cooking had instructions on how to properly skin and prepare a squirrel as recently as 1975. And it was on the menu of some of the grandest hotels. Craving some delicious meat, look no further than your tree tops.
