Guess what day it is!!!!!!!! World Autism Awareness Day!!!!!!! Numbers are increasing, and unfortunately that means your family will have at least one member diagnosed within the spectrum. Early diagnosis is important. School evaluations are not enough. You need a private diagnosis from a doctor you are comfortable with so that you can be the advocate for your childs rights to a curriculum designed to accommodate the specific needs of your child. A private diagnosis trumps school evaluations. You have to be involved, extremely dedicated, AGGRESSIVE (I have no problem with that, LOL), to change up the curriculum should you feel your child is not grasping. Our children learn differently, they cant be taught in a traditional sense. Most have sensory issues, neurological, in order to be successful, the dots have to be connected. I have found that Ashton has to feel good about the teacher, keep in mind, they are a very good judge of character. I like to believe God put something extra in them for protection. They can read your sincerity like a book. Ashton has a very sensitive sense of smell. When he was younger and not as disciplined, we had to leave the grocery store because he said a man there was a very bad, and that the man smelled funny. Ashton had a frightened panic look and was hiding behind me, we left the store. I trust his judgment tremendously. So if the teacher is just there to do a job and has no passion, your child will know and resist.
