H/T Sue McClanahan Media coverage and political rhetoric regarding the unprecedented surge of illegal immigrants flooding our southern border represents an egregious case of false framing. In a concerted rhetorical surge almost as grand as the border surge itself, we are pummeled with the assertion that this is a humanitarian crisis as we are browbeaten with pleas for compassion for the unaccompanied children who have survived a thousand-mile trek through crime-ridden Mexico. While heart-rending, this rhetoric does not bear up to the scrutiny of reason. Even as politicians and open border activists tell us that “it’s about the children,” emerging facts about the border surge tell us otherwise. The reported number of unaccompanied minors illegally crossing the border since last October has now risen to 57,000. Annualized, that predicts about 76,000 through September of this year. Juxtapose that against the more than 600,000 apprehensions by CPB and ICE in 2012, which of course does not take into account the current surge and does not include those who entered undetected. That means that these children likely represent well under ten percent of the present surge. What’s more, A July 3, 2014 ICE report on the surge states that 47 percent of all unaccompanied minors who are other than Mexican are males between 15 and 17. Scarcely innocent children, many of these young males are gang members with criminal records in their countries of origin. We are also being told by open borders activists that many of these illegal immigrants are fleeing political oppression and violence and, as such, deserve political refugee status. However, a cursory review of the current political climates of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador show no marked change in levels of violence or political status. What, then, is the reason for this sudden flood of humanity at our southern border? At a June, 2014 hearing, House Judiciary Committee Chair Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., reported:
