HAITI / DOMINICAN REPUBLIC (Security threat levels - 4 / 3): (Washington Post) According to a report issued on 7 May 2014, the mosquito-borne chikungunya virus has been confirmed in Haiti. Health officials have identified 14 of the virus in the country. Since initially being documented in St. Martin in December 2013, the chikungunya virus -- which is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito -- has spread to several countries in the Caribbean. Authorities have confirmed 150 to 200 cases in the Dominican Republic since the virus was detected there in March 2014. Most commonly found in Asia and Africa, the transmission of the chikungunya virus had been reported in nearly a dozen other Caribbean islands as well as in French Guiana, located on the northern coast of South America. The illness is rarely fatal. A majority of patients suffering from chikungunya infection have been known to recover within a week. In certain instances, however, some people experience joint pain for extended periods. There is no vaccine.
