HAWKES HEROICS SLAY SCORPS After what was widely regarded as the Rockets best win of the season last week, some pundits thought that the task against a Tomat-led Scorpions outfit might be too much to handle. With McMaster unavailable and Hudson nowhere to be found, the rockets started the game with 5. It didn’t seem to matter to a bloke called Jayden Hawkes as he helped himself to 3 from downtown in the opening 90 seconds. Hawkesy was on and the Scorps seemed to have no one to guard him. It was a shootout early with both sides going shot for shot but it was the Scorpions who took the early advantage 25-21 by the first break The Rockets really stifled the Scorpions scoring during the 2nd and 3rd stanzas with some superb team defence led by James Marks who claimed his first ever block on the hapless Mitch Hannon and boy didn’t he tell everyone about it. He wanted the GM to pull out Aloe Blacc’s smash hit “I’m the man” at the time out so everyone could get around him. GM Greg Cocks quickly put him back in his place and popped him back on the pine. Hawkesy was continuing on his merry way, now 7 of 7 from the carpark and the Rockets controlled the flow of the game. Rowville went into the final term with a handy 8 point buffer, but they knew the game was definitely not in the bag. 4 minutes down into the last and the Rockets still held that handy buffer, but up stepped All-Star MVP David Tomat and sidekick Mitch Unwin and in a flash, the game was tied at 53 apiece. Hawkesy then copped a questionable foul on Tomat and the Rockets were all of a sudden down 2. What happens when the momentum is all against you? Who do you turn to? Silly question really, give the ball to the best three-ball shooter in the league, Jayden Hawkes. You just give it to him. The next play, Hawkesy gets the pass early in the count, works over his opponent and WHACK! How good is this kid?! Amazing! Rockets back in the lead 56-55. Scoresby score on the counter thanks to the colossus human being that is Ben Smyth knocking down a very nice jay; Rowville are back down by 1 and there’s 28 seconds to play, Timeout called. Aidan “Bibby” Hudson enters the fray (yes he finally showed up). Bibby called the play, fumbled the pass under the ring, recovered, shuffled back through traffic and put in the 2 to put the rockets back in front!! The bench (James Marks) went berserk. ALL IS FORGOTTEN BIBBY, WE LOVE YOU. There was still time left for Tomat to pull something out of the bag, but he missed the 3, clock runs out, ROCKETS WIN BY 1. 58-57. This is a massive win for the Rockets and puts the boys back on top in the West. They now go to 7-4-1 and sit half a game clear of Tecoma. Hawkesy was the star, going 9 of 10 from deep and finishing with 29. The big Mossman continued his super form with yet another double double finishing with 13 & 11. With Paul McMaster and VP Greg Oakford due to return next week, we set ourselves up for a tantalising match-up against the current 2nd in the East, Selby Slammers. We look forward to the challenge, but until then… #uptheIMGrockets
