HERA, AN END OF AN ERA On November 13th 2008 at 1500 hours local time, the Hera was handed over to her new owners at Fujairah. The vessel now being renamed Hema for her last voyage to the breakers yard in Alang India, had finally reached the end of the line, after having served the owners with great success for 31 years. Since “Hera” was delivered to K/S A/S Heragas in August 1977, she had four different managers; 1977: August: Delivered to K/S A/S Heragas, manager Helge R. Myhre, Stavanger. 1980: January: Managing company renamed Rederiet Helge R. Myhre A/S, Stavanger. 1983: Managing Company moved to Oslo. Port of registry Stavanger. 1992: June: New manager, Kværner Shipping AS, Oslo. 1995: May: New manager, A/S Havtor Management, Oslo. 1995: June: New manager, Skibsaksjeselskapet Solvang, Stavanger. 2000: May: Managing Company renamed Solvang ASA. In the years between 1979 and 2000, she traded mostly between Tees and Rafnes, and Kårstø and Rafnes, first on the Phillips C.O.A., and from 1997 to 2000, on time charter for Norsk Hydro ASA. On January 4th 2000, four days into the new Millennium, she was redelivered from the Norsk Hydro T/C. Hydro took delivery of the vessel at Kårstø on November 27th 1997, in direct continuation with her previous trade under the Phillips C.O.A. “Hera” performed 157 voyages for Hydro, mostly between Kårstø and Rafnes, carrying total 1,042,120.570 tons of cargo. 55,837.694 mts Ethane 746,152.019 mts Propane 240,130.857 mts Butane On July 28th 1979, “Hera” arrived at Seal Sands ( Tees ) for the first time, ready to lift her first cargo on the Phillips C.O.A. After having loaded 4999,683 mts of Ethane, the vessel arrived at Rafnes for discharge on July 31st 1979. In the coming 18 years, “Hera” traded between Tees and Rafnes. Cargo number 1000 was loaded in Tees on November 7th 1993. Her last cargo on the Phillips C.O.A. was discharged at Rafnes on November 26th 1997. In 1997, “Hera” was the first gas carrier calling at the Sture Terminal. Since the opening of the Sture Terminal in 1988, only oil tankers had been calling at this terminal. Captain on her maiden voyage in 1977 was Bjørn Skartveit, while Captain Viggo Løtvedt was in command on her final voyage. +++ In the Olympian pantheon of classical Greek Mythology, Hera (pronounced /ˈhɪərə/ or /ˈhɛrə/, Greek Ήρα) or Here (Ήρη in Ionic and Homer) was the wife and older sister of Zeus. Her chief function was as goddess of women and marriage. In Roman mythology, Juno was the equivalent mythical character. The cow and, later, the peacock were sacred to her. Hera was born of Cronus and Rhea but was swallowed by her father after birth due to a prophecy that one of his children would take over the throne. Zeus was not swallowed because of a plan hatched by Rhea and Gaia. Rhea wrapped a stone in baby clothes and gave it to Cronus. Zeus, meanwhile, was moved to a cave on Crete. Rhea later gave Cronus a herb which, she said, could make him completely invincible, but it actually made him regurgitate the five other Olympians: Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon, as well as the previously ingested stone. When Zeus grew older, he banished Cronus to Tartarus, the deepest chasm in the underworld, because the Titans were immortal and could not be killed. Portrayed as majestic and solemn, often enthroned, and crowned with the polos (a high cylindrical crown worn by several of the Great Goddesses), Hera may bear in her hand the pomegranate, emblem of fertile blood and death, and a substitute for the narcotic capsule of the opium poppy. Scholar of Greek mythology Walter Burkert writes in Greek Religion, Nevertheless, there are memories of an earlier aniconic representation, as a pillar in Argos and as a plank in Samos. Hera was well known for her jealous and vengeful nature, most notably against Zeuss paramours and offspring, but also against mortals who crossed her, like Pelias and arguably even Paris, who offended her by choosing Aphrodite as the most beautiful of goddesses, thus earning her hatred.
