HERVEY BAY STUDENTS TO BENEFIT FROM LABOR”S EDUCATION REFORMS Students in Hervey Bay will benefit from Labor’s plan to retain the best teachers in state school classrooms. Tony Gubbins said Labor’s reforms, outlined in its Letting Teachers Teach policy, would help lift student performance in local schools. “Our policy will encourage the best of our local teachers to stay in the classroom, where students can benefit from their talents,” he said. “This is great news for students in Hervey Bay schools.” Labor’s policy will involve the development of two new classifications for talented and experienced teachers, allowing them to earn more while remaining in the classroom. It is proposed to establish Highly Accomplished or Lead teachers, as recommended by the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership, and assign pay grades that properly reflect their value to students and our education system. “This means excellent teachers can stay in the classroom rather than moving into administration, ensuring our students benefit from their expertise. Labor will invest $6 million over three years to develop new classifications for excellent teachers. The Queensland Industrial Relations Commission will be asked to determine the actual salaries of Highly Accomplished and Lead teachers.
