HOLY CITY OF ISLAM (1st part) Mecca was mention in the Bible, In Genesis21:21 And he took up dwelling in the wildernss of PARAN, (also known as FARAN).. First what is the meaning of Paran? (Faran) It is an Arabic name. In Hebrew it means 'uncertain'. Paran (Faran) has two meaning in Arabic {1}meaning to boil, to spring with force. {2}the second meaning is from the root i.e. to run. The beautiful coincidence is that the two meaning are applicable here. In the uninhabited desert for the two exiled (Hagar & the infant son,Ishmael) a spring of water burst in abundance. This spring caused the country to become populated and also become the sole source of drinking water for prilgrims proceeding to Ka'ba during pilgrimage. The Tora names it the wood of Bair-e-Shabi. According to Arab tradition, however it is the uninhabited valley of Mecca in which the same spring of water called ZamZam is situated and continuously provides water for the people.
