HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION Miami County deputies responded to 4415 Scarff Road in Bethel Twp. on 10/22/14 on the report of a missing person. The person being reported missing was Joseph R. Graley III (DOB: 4/16/83) who was the lone resident of the 4415 Scarff Road residence. Upon deputies arrival at the residence they made contact with the sole occupant of the residence, Frank L. Bowen (DOB: 10/25/89). Bowen indicated he was a friend of Graley and had been staying at the residence. Deputies learned that Bowen had an active warrant out of Miami County Municipal Court for a probation violation. Bowen was subsequently arrested on the warrant and incarcerated in the Miami County jail where he currently remains. Deputies did not find Graley at the residence while they were there. Deputies observations of the residence and the circumstances increased their suspicions that something more was going on with respect to Graley’s whereabouts. The following morning detectives continued following-up on the missing person report and did interview Bowen. After interviewing Bowen detectives were further concerned with the welfare of Graley. Detectives then applied for and were granted a search warrant for the 4415 Scarff Road residence which was executed in the late morning hours on 10/23/14. Not long after executing the search warrant detectives located the remains of a male white in his late twenties to early thirties outside at the rear of the residence. The remains appeared to have suffered some trauma which led detectives to investigate the scene as a homicide. Miami County Coroner Dr. Steve Huffman responded to the scene and later authorized for an autopsy to be performed at the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office. Additionally, deputies requested the assistance of the Ohio Attorney General’s crime scene unit out of B.C.I.& I. which did respond to the scene to assist with the crime scene processing. This morning, the remains of the white male were positively identified through fingerprints and tattoos as being the reported missing, Joseph R. Graley III. As of this morning the crime scene processing at the 4415 Scarff Road residence is continuing and detectives will learn more after the conclusion of the autopsy. Detectives are asking anyone who may have information on this case to please contact Major Steve Lord, who is overseeing the investigation, at 937-440-3965 EXT. 6633 or after hours at the Miami County Communication Center at 937-440-9911.
