HUBERT (NOT HUGH) ZEGERS, CLASS OF 1970 This is another original print saved from the trash. I was in Key Club for 4 years with Hubert. His brother Eric was in the Class of 71. Hubert lived across the street from GEMCO on San Gabriel Blvd. His house was later demolished and there is a huge Serbian church there now. In 1974 when I was a student at a generic college (San Jose State), I found out that Hubert was going to be a contestant on a game show called SPLIT SECOND. This is where he had to give an answer to a question to beat his opponents. There were no video cameras back then, so I filmed the show using my 8mm Kodak movie camera! He won $40,000 (!!!) which was worth $189,011 in 2013. He was smart enough to buy a house in South Pasadena which he still owns. I gave the film to him as a present. Hubert was a dedicated and caring teacher as reflected by student reviews, a real Renaissance Man who knew much about fine art, history, food, wine, music, cultures, etc. However, a few of his classmates thought that he had become uppity. Said one classmate, He calls himself Hugh, but he is still Hubert to me! During the 1999 RHS 50 Yr. Reunion, I heard that some of our classmates went into his class and rearranged the furniture! Right after high school, 5 of us (Hubert, Mike Snow, Alan Como, Patrick Leyba, and I) went on a long road trip, hoping to get to Yellowstone. We drove Pats camper truck with a tent trailer. Just outside of Salem, Oregon at night, we had a horrible accident. I was in the back sleeping with 2 others when suddenly, all hell broke loose! My immediate thought was, Hubert must be driving! I thought we were in a cement mixer, as we tumbled around and around back there and finally came to a stop with everything piled on top of us. I felt like throwing up (I didnt). One of the front wheels separated, the truck tumbled end over end, and we nearly went off the bridge, but luckily, steel cables caught the bumper and saved us. No one got really hurt, although we were shocked and bruised. A tow truck came out from Wiltses Garage (now Wiltses Towing, I checked online) and towed the wreck away. I still have their business card. We stayed at a small motel, waiting for the insurance company to see if they would have it fixed. They declared it a total loss, so we had to catch the miserable Greyhound back to LA. Alan Como later went to USC via US Air Force, served in the USAF, then became an emergency room doctor in Colorado; Mike Snow went into the dairy business in Colorado and is now retired; Pat Leyba went to UCLA film school and got into Hollywood, now retired. Hubert (not Hugh) went to USC, taught at RHS for decades, and retired a few years ago from RHS, and I hope he is enjoying his retirement.
