HYPNOSIS – SO WHERE DID I ALL BEGIN? EVOLUTION OF HYPNOSIS A Greek engraving dated 928 BC show Chiron, the most renowned physician of his time, placing his pupil Aesculapius in a hypnotic trance. EARLY PIONEERS IN EUROPE Dr. James Braid, a prominent English surgeon, is considered to be the father of the scientific evolution of hypnosis for writing “Doctorine of Suggestion”. Ambroise Auguste Liebeault and Hippolyt Marie Bernheim are considered to be the legitimate inventors of hypotherapy. They considered hypnosis to be a function of normal behavior and introduced the concept of suggestion and suggestibility. HYPNOSIS AND MODERN MEDICINE In 1955, the British Medical Association approved the use of hypnosis for the treatment of psychoneurosis and for anaesthesia during surgery for childbirth. On September 13, 1958, the Council on Mental Health of the American Medical Association recommended hypnosis instruction be included in the curricula of medical schools and post graduate training centres. SOUTH AFRICA Although in SA, hypnosis practitioners are currently not yet formally recognized by the SAMDA and the medical aid system, it is important to realize that the Genesis Medical Scheme already incorporated smoking cessation by approved hypnosis practitioners and pay for it. Worldwide hypnosis is considered a valuable tool, and an important aspect of holistic health care. Contact your local Certified Hypnotherapist (non medical) NOW at 082 683 2835!
