Had a great day today in San Francisco! It was lovely to sleep in a real bed and have a long hot shower! We drove into San Francisco (we are actually staying in Fremont which is about 1 hr away) and managed to find FREE PARKING!!! (big deal here) in the Golden Gate Gardens. We wandered through the gardens which were really lovely (lots of nice places to sit and have lunch). There were statues everywhere and lots of little hidden places. There was even a tiny Shakespeare garden (see photo) and at the end was a list of all of his references to gardens and flowers. We then had a very long walk from the gardens towards downtown. It was really nice to walk and see the real parts of the city (I.e. Where people actually live and work and not just what the tourists usually see). It was just what it looks like in the movies! There is some awesome architecture and also some really ugly (newer) buildings. We got all day cable car and bus tickets (because you cant go to San Francisco and not go on the cable car!) and clattered our way around. We walked through the San Francisco wharf and around some of the piers and had some great views of the Bay Bridge. We didnt go around far enough to see the Golden Gate Bridge but we will get good views of it when we go on our Alcatraz tour on Wednesday. We went through Chinatown and had dinner in a small restaurant there (clearly a local restaurant and we stuck out like a sore thumb!). There is a clear line where Chinatown stops, you literally cross the road and it is back to the normal shops. We drove home over the Bay Bridge (lower level) and got some nice views of the skyline which was pretty nice (photos not so good!) Tomorrow we are having a roller coaster day at 6 flags and then on Wednesday we are doing the Alcatraz and Angel Island (state park) tour and might visit the Americas cup area. Just in case you were wondering yes I have been wearing a flower in my hair!
