Halter Breaking – The Donkey Way Tammy Hutton of Hilldale Farm - TopicsExpress

Halter Breaking – The Donkey Way Tammy Hutton of Hilldale Farm in Brashear, Texas prefers to let her foals be horses, turned out with the herd until weaning. For 20 years she has used Jenny donkeys to halter break her foals. The process is simple, they halter the foals in a stall then attach the lead rope to the donkeys harness. They then lead them to the open pasture where the ropes can’t get hung up on anything. It usually takes about 4 or 5 hours or overnight depending on the disposition of the foal. When the foals rear up or pull back, the donkeys just stand and wait. The donkeys have pretty good judgment and it avoids the battle between people and foals. Perhaps a new job for Mesa here at Another Brown Horse Farm…. This story was found in the September issue of Western Horseman.
