Register and log-in and call in to ask questions!!! #ShareWellness (Training Teleconference) Monday, September 15, at 2 p.m. EDT Register and log in here: esi-bethesda/wellnessteleconference/ OVERVIEW Many peers and persons in recovery die decades earlier than the general population due to high rates of preventable medical conditions-including obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. In addition, various mental, substance use, and physical conditions often co-occur. Peers and persons in recovery also receive primary health care less often than the general population for myriad reasons, including trauma, fear, discrimination, social isolation, and poverty. Peers and persons in recovery also may lack health insurance and health education due to these social determinants. Fragmented primary health care and behavioral health care services and systems may also play a role in peers lack of health care access. This webinar will address how health care providers, working in collaboration with peers and persons in recovery, can accurately assess and improve individuals physical health and well-being. Attendees will hear from peer leaders who have successfully integrated physical and/or primary health and behavioral health care needs into their organizations practices. Speakers will share and discuss recommendations to help health care professionals provide holistic and patient-centered primary care for peers and persons in recovery. This discussion will promote optimal engagement of individuals and will encourage attendees to recognize each peer and person in recoverys unique needs and experiences to further and improve positive health outcomes. Attendees will learn the importance of wellness to address physical health, the effects of discrimination and trauma on physical health, the connection between behavioral health and physical health, common issues to be mindful of (such as metabolic syndrome), culturally attuned practices and language use to foster trust and mutual dialogue, sample questions to understand and provide support, how to integrate behavioral health needs into ones assessment, and more.
