Happy Fall of Berlin Wall Day!!! Can you believe it fell 25 years ago???? And then German reunification the next year??? I think Richard York was at the Berlin Wall then?? After studying the Soviet Union and Eastern European politics - and Communism - at Uni in the mid 1970s, when the U.S.S.R. was flexing its apparently big muscles in the post-Vietnam era of the decline of the USA, I have to say I expected the Soviet Empire to be around MUCH longer! At least the brainless CIA also didnt spot the impending collapse! Why pay spies at all if they are so useless? BUT - a warning shot existed - there was a book set as one reading (no, I didnt :-) ) - Will the Soviet Union Survive to 1984 - amazing - it did - but only just - falling to bits soon afterwards. My only link to the collapse of the Communist Empire was helping the Commie Archive in London carry out an enormous bust of Lenin - cast bronze - quite good really - bigger than life size, and the marble plinth was a killer to move - I felt I was doing my TINY bit to chip away at the mighty edifice. They sent it off to be auctioned - how capitalist an ending!
