Happy Ground Squirrel Day! It was many years ago on a bright and sunny October 1st that Joe Regelski was taking a walk along the haul road when he came across an amiable ground squirrel. Always unflappable, he took that squirrel to lunch, where he imparted tales of Squirrel Wisdom lost in the annals of history. Then the ground squirrel picked up the tab, ensuring 6 more weeks of nice weather! Though it could be fallible, the predictions have seemed to hold up over the years with about the same degree of accuracy as that other rodent in Punxsutawney: if the ground squirrel is grumpy and makes Joe pay, a hard and early winter is on the way; if that squirrel doesnt show at all, head for cover its about to squall; if the squirrel does some tricks, sunny days with a few showers to immix!
