Happy Makar Sankranti MAKAR SANKRANTI FESTIVAL With Makar Sankranti, Bihu and Pongal, India Celebrates a Holy Day ..It is the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti, Bihu and Pongal today. The festival commemorates the Uttarayan or the beginning of the northward journey of the Sun, besides the harvest season. Lakhs of devotees took holy dip in rivers and ponds to celebrate the festival. . Though Makar Sankranti is celebrated differently in almost all the states, the essence of this harvest festival remains the same. Pongal in Tamil Nadu: In south India, Pongal is celebrated to mark the end of the harvesting season. The festival gets its name from the dish called Pongal which involves boiling rice with milk and jaggery in clay pots. The rice is then garnished with cashew nuts, cardamom, raisins and ghee. Apart from this, people also adorn their homes with banana leaves and make decorative patterns on the floor using rice flour. Magh Bihu in Assam: Bihu is a festival celebrated in Assam to mark the end of the harvesting season between January and February. Magh Bihu stands out for the traditional sweetmeat called Pitha – a rice-based dish stuffed with a sweet filling usually made of coconut or chana (cottage cheese). Apart from cooking up an elaborate feast dur In Maharashtra, Makar Sankranti is celebrated with much zest and fervour. Women wear traditional outfits in black and organise a get-together called haldi-kunku (literally meaning turmeric and vermillion), apart from cooking up traditional sweetmeats like til ladoo, puranpoli and halwa. Kite flying is also a popular custom during this time of the year.
