Have listened to Reed the last couple of days. His songs really are dramatic monologues. Even the songs that dont altogether work have lyrics that stab you in the heart. I thought Reeds later work became self conscious; he was no longer writing songs, he was making Poetic Statements. I might have been wrong. Even if Im not, by the terms described in this article, his attempts were often, progressive, dramatic, powerful. Listened to BERLIN yesterday - or started to listen, I should say. Had to turn it off, at least, for the time being. Has anyone ever written songs as gut wrenching, delivered in as raw and unadorned vocal performance? The song STREET HASSLE, too.
