Have you ever stood in the grocery store wondering if you need - TopicsExpress

Have you ever stood in the grocery store wondering if you need tomato paste, pasta, or some other staple? Have you ever come home from the store with something you remembered that you needed for a particular recipe, only to discover that you already have two containers taking up space in your pantry or refrigerator? Ever get ready to make a recipe knowing that everything in it is something you already have on hand, only to discover that youre out of a key ingredient? Create for yourself a reverse grocery list. Heres how. Step one: go through your cabinets and fridge and write down all of those staples--even the spices. The list will be long, but it will be worth it. Step two: post the list where you can see it easily. That might mean the fridge. It might be on the inside of a cabinet or pantry door. It might be on your phone (where mine is). Step three: pay attention to the list. When you use something up, cross it off and add it to your grocery list. When you get ready to make one of those from things you already have on hand recipes, check the list before you begin. Add to the list when you bring in the groceries. Finally: Review the list every two or three months. If youre like me, youll get lax about the list, so making a point to review it every so often is a way to keep on top of it. This way youll always know what you have and what you need. I finally decided to do this when I brought home another container of sour cream, only to discover that I already had three (yes, THREE!) in my fridge. Its been a wonderful thing.
