Have you ever wondered who that stunning photo your looking at really belongs to? Or where it originated from? Did you know each camera stores data of each picture taken, and even modern smart phone cameras can store the same data. Some websites such as Flickr also retain this data for each photo which is visible to the viewer ie the public. This data is ideal to prove proof of ownership of a photo, read on for more info........ What is Exif data? Exif data is a record of the settings a camera used to take a photo or video. This information is embedded into the files the camera saves. EXIF is short for Exchangeable Image File, a format that is a standard for storing interchange information in digital photography image files using JPEG compression. Almost all new digital cameras use the EXIF annotation, storing information on the image such as Camera Make & Model, shutter speed, exposure compensation, F number, what metering system was used, if a flash was used, ISO number, DATE & TIME the image was taken, white balance, auxiliary lenses that were used and resolution. Some images may even store GPS information so you can easily see where the images were taken, Exif data can also be used as proof of ownership on a photograph due to the information it embeds into a photo file. I used to delete my Exif data from photographs, as I felt I had no need for it, but now I always keep it as proof of ownership of my photographs. Its definitely a good idea to retain your original photos along with the Exif data as proof of ownership, after-all a camera that embeds data into a photo file cannot lie. Even some mobile smart phones can save Exif Data now too! To get to your photo Exif data, just open the photo you want to view, right click & select properties, then select Details, all the Exif Data stored will then be displayed for that photo.
