He is the yin to her yang, the coffee to her tea. Shadow and Petra have been living together off and on for about 45 days. Petra was originally adopted from GSRNC as a puppy and returned after 5.5 years due to a decline in her owner’s health. Some years ago she was attacked by several dogs at an off leash park and subsequently became fearful of other dogs. After that her owners avoided dog play dates. Petra arrived at her foster home and met Shadow, a super social dog. For a few days she ran him off, then later tolerated his offers of play, but within a week she gave in to his charms! On the flip side Shadow is a dog who does not want to be alone but his foster mom is away at work for long hours each day. Petra keeps Shadow company and they spend their days hanging out with full access to the house and yard. Last week their foster mom was away and they went to a boarding kennel. We were worried that Petra would not do well but they shared a kennel and by being with Shadow it helped to keep her calm. In fact, they have gotten so used to one another that they even ate their meals together in the same kennel. We often think of rescue in terms of people reaching out to save dogs. In this case both dogs are rescuing each other.
