Hearts Compelled to Share - Daily Devotion for Friday, January 23, 2015 Mercy Triumphs Over Judgment Read: James 2:13 ( ow.ly/HzMQ3 ) Emperor Napoleon had a rule in his army; anyone who went absent without leave, upon being captured, would be shot the next morning. One day, a young man of seventeen saw the horror and destruction of war and became frightened of the death. He ran away from his post but was caught the next day. The young man’s mother, who was Napoleon’s cook, pleaded for mercy. Napoleon ordered her out of his sight, saying, “Woman, you son does not deserve mercy.” To this, the mother replied, “Of course, you are right. If he deserved mercy, it would no longer be mercy!” With that, Napoleon spared her son. Rather than giving us what we deserve, God grants us mercy. The essence of God’s mercy is summed up in Romans 5:8, “God shows His love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” In response to God’s grace, we show mercy as well. Rather than criticizing, condemning, or complaining, God calls us to a life of compassion and kindness. God’s mercy moves us to be merciful to others. Prayer: Dear Lord, bring someone into my life today with whom I can share your mercy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
