Heat Seeking Missiles and countermeasure ( Part-1) : Heat - TopicsExpress

Heat Seeking Missiles and countermeasure ( Part-1) : Heat seeking, also referred as Infra-red homing missiles uses the emission from a target of electromagnetic radiation in the infrared part of the spectrum to track and follow it. Missiles which use infrared seeking are often referred to as heat-seekers, since infrared (IR) is just below the visible spectrum of light in frequency and is radiated strongly by hot bodies. Many objects such as people, vehicle engines and aircraft generate and retain heat, and as such, are especially visible in the infra-red wavelengths of light compared to objects in the background. Whereas, it is very tough for a heat seeking missile to differentiate between objects with IR emission. Earlier heat seeking missiles were easily fooled by flares and other objects in the background. Nowadays CCD camera is also used for guidance but it needs a hell lot of intense image processing which is a complicated stuff! But it is hard to be fooled by decoys or flares! How does a heat seeking missile sees its prey? The Chinook pic gives you the answer! Ever imagined that these missiles should follow IR signatures from the sun during day time and deviate towards it? Have an answer for it? Let us know! ~Warrior
