Heather Hayward Rorick has asked me to post info on my visit to Home Affairs (Commercial Str). I took my Mom to apply for her smart card I.D. (initially to Umgeni Rd & was redirected). If your relative is over 60 & it is in the month of their birth, you may go ahead. The closest garages are Nicol Square or Pine Parkade. We were immediately escorted to the front (they were very accommodating with my aging mother) & my Mom was photographed within minutes & then we went on to do fingerprinting. The application is done electronically so no paperwork or horrid ink on the fingers. It is free of charge & your I.D. is the only requirement. I think if it is your first I.D. application, more documents are required however you may call the Customer Service Line 0800 601 190 & they will help. We were in & out within 45mins & it would have been sooner but we had a trainee processing the application. I got a sms within minutes of leaving & a further sms will be sent when the card is ready for collection. The applicant is required to return to collect the card as the card is activated with their fingerprints. Quite painless even though we had not been in town for many years.
