Heather from Assisi contacted us (see post below) re some alarming information about the law relating to Greyhounds, lurchers, whippets and similar breeds. -------------- We have also received a message from Richard Hambleton to say that he received the following letter from DARD: It is not an offence to keep a Greyhound, Lurcher, Whippet or Crossbreed thereof as a pet in Northern Ireland it is worth pointing out that as these are Racing breeds we would advise that these dogs are unsuit...able as Domestic animals and would strongly advise against Promoting them as anything other than Racing Breeds, where they are to go into a Domestic Situation we would advise that they are only given to people that have or are willing to fit an outside Kennel with Run. It may therefore constitute an offence if the above mentioned breeds are promoted as anything other than a Racing Breed although we would strees that it would be highly unlikely that this would be actioned on. Any kennel keeping Greyhounds may be advised to register with the IGB. Again may we state that we at present have no plans to repeal the present Greyhound Legislation although the Minister does intend opening the Animal Welfare Act 2011 later this year. This is what Richard has to say: So my question now is, is it an offence or not to keep them as a pet indoors, are DARD now saying that Greyhounds are to be considered Dangerous Dogs, is this their position at the moment and will this change when they open the present animal welfare act? Plus why say it maybe an offence and then say it would not be actioned which contradicts their own statment, so is it or isnt it an offence. This whole thing with the Control of Greyhounds Act is just getting more and more bogged down in idiotic statments.
